SB 905 - Pending California Legislation Could Lead to More Drunk Driving Accidents

car crash

Drunk driving is the leading cause of death on U.S. roadways. In fact, there are more than 300,000 drunk driving accidents every day across the nation, which results in nearly 10,500 fatalities and 290,000 injuries each year. Drunk driving accidents are entirely preventable, and federal and state laws are in place to help prevent drunk driving accidents. However, a recent bill introduced into the California legislature, known as SB 905, may actually increase the number of drunk driving accidents in the state.

About SB 905

SB 905 allows bars in certain cities to extend their alcohol sale hours to 4 a.m. Instead of having a uniform closing time for all bars in California, the bill will let some establishments stay open later than others, which may encourage people to drive from city to city looking for more drinks. This will likely increase the number of drunk driving accidents across the state. SB 905 has passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee and is awaiting a full Assembly vote.

Changing Bar Closing Times Could Have Serious Public Health Implications

One study in the state of New York found that extended alcohol sale business hours were correlated with increased misdemeanor drunk driving and first-time drunk driving incidents. In addition, when the bar closing hours in Ontario, Canada were extended, a significant increase in alcohol-related motor vehicle accident fatalities resulted. San Marcos, Texas passed a bill extending bar closing hours until 2 a.m. in an effort to reduce drunk driving and other alcohol-related issues. However, the result was just the opposite. The law intensified the problem, leading to an increase in public intoxication incidents and more drunk driving traffic accidents.

The research shows that extending bar closing times will most likely cause a greater number of drunk driving accidents, putting everyone on the road at risk. Making all bar closing times across the state uniform could help discourage drinking and driving.
